Synodex Farm Trial
May 30th 2019
Teat skin condition is paramount for effective milking and should form part of a dairy farm mastitis plan. Smooth, supple teat skin, with no lesions, cracks or rough areas provides a natural barrier against mastitis causing bacteria.
Mastitis is a major endemic problem in dairy cows presenting as an inflammation of the mammary gland and udder tissue. Most cases of mastitis can be treated successfully, however mastitis can cause damage to the udder tissue, which results in a reduction in milk yields, sometimes permanently.
In addition to the welfare of the cow, there are economic benefits for keeping skin in optimal condition to prevent mastitis cases. Economic losses may result from veterinary costs incurred through treating a...

A study, conducted by researchers from Cambridge university, found that a quarter of British chicken in major supermarkets contained antibiotic-resistant E. coli.
The wide usage of antibiotics as growth promoters in poultry and livestock agriculture is a cause for serious concern to the public. The grounds for limiting the use to treatment rather than prevention of in livestock agriculture are increasing as meat and processed foods are increasingly contaminated by antibiotic resistant bacteria. Cows that are well looked after give substantially better returns, and have lower veterinary costs. Cows given a daily dose of the ‘happy hormone’ Serotonin produce milk with higher nutritional content.
Wisconsin is home to 1.28 million dairy cows, with an average farm size of 130, and 96% of dairy farms are family owned. As farms are consolidated worldwide, the increase in farm size means greater stress is placed on the dairy cow.
Intensive dairy farming means cows are increasingly kept indoors on hard floors for part or all the year, with less and less time spent in...

Product Focus: Hoofshield
March 4th 2015
Digital dermatitis in dairy cattle is present on most farms and severely impacts the dairy industry worldwide. It is associated with serious discomfort and painful lesions around the hoof, eventually leading to lameness. Lameness limits the cow’s ability to stand long enough to allow feeding and milking, and can cause a marked decline in animal health, with milk output reduced by up to 50%. A single case of lameness can cost the farmer as much as £180.
Traditionally, formalin was used to prevent hoof disease in cows. It is however, a harsh chemical which can be painful on raw lesions, increasing stress levels in cattle. Formalin also causes severe allergic reactions, irritation of the skin and the...

It is well recognised that the commercial performance of the poultry industry hinges on preventive hygiene measures. Breaking the cycle of egg-laying bird infections through vaccination and strict hygiene measures in poultry housing is critical. Vertical salmonella infections are of particular concern for hatchery managers.
Hatchery hygiene to prevent environmental contamination of the egg surface is a key determinant in hatchability and quality of day old chicks. Extensive organic and microbial contamination in the hatchery environment poses an exceptional hygiene challenge. Exploding infected eggs can cause...

Dairy Focus: Teat Health in Dairy Cattle
January 6th 2015
With winter weather conditions continuing to impact on the UK Dairy Farmers’ bottom line, now is the time to address your teat hygiene plan.
Udder infections in dairy cattle are estimated to cost the UK milk suppliers £120 million each year (NADIS). Chronic infections are costly to manage and can result in permanent damage to the teat and udder, requiring in advanced cases culling of dairy cows. Sub-clinical infections represent substantial loss of income for the dairy farmer consequent to a drop in milk yields and milk quality (raised bulk tank cell counts).
Dr Rubinah Chowdhary said: “The management of udder infections requires a holistic approach on the farm,...
Product Focus: Viroxide Super
November 17th 2014
The devastating impact of poultry viral pandemics such as Avian Flu is felt beyond farm economics, having worldwide implications on consumer health, food safety and supply. The prolonged persistence of viruses under poultry farming conditions causes recurring infections in flocks. Viral infection can leave birds immuno-suppressed and susceptible to other opportunistic pathogens. Preventing mortality and sub-clinical disease therefore requires reduction of all environmental pathogens through the use of approved virucidal disinfectants within a strict biosecurity programme.
Formulation of disinfectants is a science. Most disinfectants fail under farmyard conditions...
